The Silent Summer?

In the 1960s, a book was written titled the Silent Spring, which helped launch an environmental movement that created awareness/bans on harmful pesticides and pollutants. It highlights an insecticide called DDT that did a great job of killing not only bugs but everything else in it's path...thus creating a very "silent spring."

I was reminded of that book today when I unhooked our cable box to be turn back in. That's right folks, we are going to attempt to be cable free this summer. Here is the deal, we love cable. HGTV, NATGEO, DISC, & FOOD NETWORK are channels that we cannot get enough of...which is the problem. With the option of the TV, we spend less time playing as a family, less time reading, less time conversing over our day, and a score of other things.

One could make the case that TV is our DDT. It is great for entertainment and you can learn a lot like how to survive a shark attack or how to make a succulent stuffed roast duck with balsamic cherry sauce. However, it does little to make us a better family. Our goal is to be a better family...to grow together.

This summer, we are going to make the house a little more "silent"...for the better.
